WFS is currently recording our next FULL LENGTH album!!!

September 1 2011

Hey friends!

I just wanted to fill in everyone with what we have been up to in the last little while ( and what we will be doing in the next few months ).

This Sunday we will be heading into Mushroom studios to record the final drum takes for our next full length album. We are all very excited for the drop of this album as it will be an updated version of the music we've been writing in the past year.

It promises to be a little more up-beat and forward then the last album, but remain very much in the style we have been working to create called WFS.

Stay tuned for studio updates, pics, blogs, video's, artwork and of course... the next album!

Dan

Tues Aug 2 - Let the Good times Roll.. WFS TVC and LOB - The Railway club!

August 2 2011
Event time: doors at 8pm - $8 cover, music starts at 9pm
Event location: The Railway Club 579 Dunsmuir Street

Tuesday August 2nd will host a night of music ranging from Acoustic rock to party rock down at the Railway Club.

Doors at 8 - $8 cover
Music starts at 9

...The lineup of bands ( in order of appearance ) is as follows...

***The Velvet Chameleon ( Vancouver Alt/Phsych Rock )***

Wesley and Marcus met in high school in 1947. Then they rode on a dragon to outer space, where they met Adarsh. The trio have been working at Superstore ever since, where they report to floor manager Justin. We take bribes.

Be sure to check out their recent release at...
http://thevelvetchameleon.com/

***Live on Brighton ( Canadian Party Rock )***

Live on Brighton are your staple ‘party rock’ band who’s simple motto is to be “playing good music to good people with good friends” and it is with this endearing trait that the charm of this three piece prevails.

http://www.liveonbrighton.com/

***Waiting for Sunday ( Vancouver Indie/Acoustic Rock )***

Waiting For Sunday has a sound that echoes of their primary influences, City and the Colour, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Modest Mouse. If that sounds like an unlikely core for a band to model its sound on, then The Courage… is bound to be a sonic pleasure to many in the Vancouver scene.

The Light Machines...
(Rock & Roll & Soul)
http://myspace.com/thelightmachines

All natural experimenters, Jeff Zipp (guitar), Tylor Rolyt (vocals, guitar) and Nick Beddow (bass) each contribute unique but complimentary musical sensibilities to create the fleshed-out modern Brit-pop sound that is The Light Machines. Zipp is a fan of Chuck Berry's sloppy rhythm licks and plays with an easy looseness, and Tylor's cranking vocals are reminiscent of a young Jagger with undertones of David Bowie. Beddow pulls from the inimitable baselines of bands like Sonic Youth and the Rolling Stones and is unafraid to infuse a classic blues riff with disco beats or a reggae baseline.

Together the trio blends genres as disparate as southern rock, blues, glam and disco. It's an artful mix of electronic beats, powerful vocals and alternately delicate and shredding guitar. And though the band regularly draws comparisons to names like Kings of Leon, Jet, and LCD Soundsystem, The Light Machines are impossible to pigeon-hole – they have a sound all their own. Onstage, the band's shared passion for classic Brit-pop rock 'n' roll trumps all. It's no surprise that The Light Machines can take a live show from a slow-dance lovers pace (Come One, Come All) to a rattle-your-brains, hide-your-grandparents-and-children frenzy (Criminal) in a matter of minutes.

The band also comes with superb representation care of Jonathan Fluevog and the Vogville Recording family, and will also be featured in the upcoming music documentary Undiscovered: The Film. The Light Machines look forward to embarking on a cross-Canada tour to promote the film this January, playing a high school every day and a venue every night – working hard and doing what they love.

Leave the Lion...
(formerly the Adam Rosenthal band)
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Adam-Rosenthal-Band/163799883631226

Adam Rosenthal, born in Papua, New Guinea had a mundane life until age fifteen when he discovered he was growing wings and could fly. His first choice to relocate was (obviously) Canada. Due to his lack of basic geographical understanding, he landed in Newfoundland. Adam quickly discovered Newfoundland is far too east and very cold and decided to cross-train in order to run across Canada; this endeavor eventually found him here..., best city in the world, Vancouver BC.

Upon arrival on the beautiful West Coast, Adam became fast friends with Ralph and Stephan; A friendship that would shape many of his future plans. One drunken night the three of them decided to draw straws to decipher the direction of their adult lives.

Ralph drew the shortest straw and was the one who had to get married (poor Ralph). Stephan drew the middle length straw and had to swim across English Bay which left Adam with the longest straw... So a music career was his fate.

A quick business decision had Adam trading in his wings for mad guitar skills and it was off to the races. He soon discovered that Ralph's marriage had already ended in divorce and wrote his first song based on this sad event. When interviewed, Adam's only words on the subject were "It was a heart-breaker, one I just had to get out of the way. It was really shitty."

Last Goodbye - Video shoot

February 5 2011

Well... when this thing we call a band first started, I would have called you nuts if you told me some of the happenings that would unravel in the future. Our first video shoot for the song " Last Goodbye " is definetly NO exception of that. On Sat Jan 29 2011 we began work at 7 am...

It was cold, wet, gloomy and dark, but the finished product was our light at the end of the tunnel. The time for sacrifice was now apparent.

Without spoiling the plot that we had been working towards for months, I will leave you with some stills of the shoot. We promise to have the finished product online shortly.

wfs

PS

A HUGE thanks to all the cast and crew who made the shoot a big success!!!

BLOG - Jan 2011

January 17 2011

Jan 17th 2011

Well... have you held up your new years resolution so far...? I haven't... but luckily I mine was not to quit pursuing a career in the one thing I feel I am good at, music.

Regardless of my other-life, I still have a great feeling about 2011

Wednesday Jan 12th we had a show booked for the media club. With almost a whole set of brand new material, we we're hesitant but extremely excited to showcase some brand new songs for some old fans and friends alike. We opened the night and were followed by Adam Rosenthal, and Jack Mercer. It was to our belief that Jan 12th was probably our best show to date... I'm not sure if it was the new gear, the new material, or a new confidence... But a combination of the three came together and resulted in one of the best crowd responses we have ever received.

On Saturday Jan 15th we began the recording of the next WFS album. We rolled into Fadermaster studios Vancouver, and were welcomed by Paul Boechler and his assistant Paul 3. ( where paul 2 was, I'm still not sure... lol ) After about 3 hours for setup, we began live off the floor takes of 8 songs scheduled to land on our next release. Working in the studio from 10 pm till 10 am can really throw your equilibrium out of wack, so its best to prepare accordingly with gravol and coffee the day before. zzzzzzzzzzz....... Nonetheless, after a very successful night/morning we packed up our gear, drove home, and slept the rest of sunday away...

Today I feel fully recovered from the all nighter. I already miss being in studio, even with the ridiculous hours we worked.

So yeah! That's about it.

We will now be setting our sights on some legit band photo's and a music video that will defiantly turn you upside-down...

Signing out.

Dan Hudson, and the guys of WFS.

News! News! News!

May 6 2010

So we have a few new things on the horizon here at wfs!

For starters the cd is finished ( finally ) and we will be releasing it on May 15th @ the redroom! You may just hear a new wfs track that night too... We will also have the album for sale via tunecore.com for those who wish to have a copy on their ipod, but won't be able to make it out.

We finished a new line of merchandise including t shirts, hoodies, tanks, and lampshades ( no, just kidding ) and it will all be available at the May 15th show.

There have been a few new challenges as well. We applied for the Peak performance project, and we are also applying for a tour grant. Yeah, that's right! We are planning to go on tour this summer! Across to the Island and then across to Alberta. Stay tuned for tour dates!

That's about all I can think of right now...

3:49AM and I’m tired but wired… (Bourbon gig recap)

February 28 2010

image

So let’s start at the end and work backwards.

It’s 3:49AM and I’m tired but wired. Mircea and I shared a cab home- and what a ride it was. An adventurous ride full of post-gig chatter, the entire Bronze Medal winning Ladies Cross-Country Skiing team from Finland, the forgotten bag of death and a spot of Gatorade. What a night. FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN. I haven’t eaten since that awful pizza about 7pm and my stomach is starting to growl. But sleep is about to trump hunger. I need to hit the hay. But before I do, let’s go back to the Bourbon.

Wasn’t the vibe and energy coming out of Canada’s Hockey win over Slovakia just totally bonkers? The Bourbon was ripe with cheers and beers- and at one point the entire stage was full of Olympic sized revelry. Yikes- I thought to myself, where’s my drum kit going to go? Up before us WFS blokes was a great band called Columbia. They are an up and coming Canadian rock band, and if you can- you should check them out on their upcoming Cross Canadian Tour. http://www.myspace.com/columbiaband

A few cans of R@d Bull later, it’s time to hit the stage. After seeing the band Coeur de Pirate get booed last week at Livecity Yaletown- I was sort of worried that our slower songs might not go over so well. But what happened was an honest performance on our part- and something just felt right. Maybe it was looking out and seeing a few people singing along, or the Olympic spirit that filled the room- who knows. But it felt good. Something just clicked.

Time to hit the pillow.

Sweet Dreams,

Ben.

Sam Roberts Band / Arkells / Coeur de Pirate @ LiveCity Yaletown.

February 25 2010

So I finally made the plunge and saw an Olympic concert @ the David Lam Park Livecity Yaletown venue. Totally worth the hour long wait. I mean when I went to Edgefest and Summersault festivals the line ups were hours and hours. After a proper security check (no cavity searches thank you) we made it into the venue, and it was definitely a fun night.

After a high energy set by the Arkells, I found myself loving their drummer, but absolutely hating the winter hat the lead singer was wearing. Why? Why could I not get past the hat? No clue- it just looked out of place. I loved the Canadian tux look- but this hat- wardrobe malfunction anybody? Janet Jackson might have approved. He looked like Bob and Doug MacKenzie from SCTV. Anybody out there remember Bob and Doug? Strange Brew? "What a hoser."

Meanwhile, some drunk meat heads in front of us started punching each other. It was as if the Sam Roberts Band were suddenly just entertainment hired for the Anarchist Protest after party. Fists were flying but nobody really knew exactly why. Bet they never read Lord of the Flies in high school. At first they were quite entertaining, but then they decided to start a mosh pit whether or not the song called for one. Romantic ballad? Mosh pit. Dance tune? Mosh pit. Ukulele solo? You get the picture…

Cheers,

Ben.

P.S. Sam Roberts Band flippin' rocked........

News Update: Positive inspirations and a few educational rites of passage

February 20 2010

Dear friends,

In the past few weeks- we’ve had both positive inspirations and a few educational rites of passage. The studio work is a little harder than we thought- and every deadline we seem to make gets pushed back due to one thing or another. But this isn’t like avoiding doing your homework- we have taken every set back as an opportunity to work even harder to make up for the lost time. Blood, sweat and tears. Every time a door gets slammed in our faces, we summon up the strength to step through a new door and become a better band. Dark places can sometimes show you the light.

Let’s get to some details! We really are closer than ever to having this album finished. We have been working with a number of people on this project- but most recently- we have had a new face helping us out with this record, a gentleman by the named of Colin Everall. He has been at the engineering helm at a few lovely studio rooms at the brand new Nimbus Recording School. If all goes well we plan to finish the album off at Nimbus. Well, that’s hoping that Colin can put up with us!!

Speaking of new faces, we should also introduce Christian Aldred into the fold. You’ll notice that his name is up there on our facebook page under members and also on our main website under the contact page. Christian is the guy we have been wanting to work with for a while, but we just didn’t know it. We just kinda fell into it. We started saying “Why not Christian” and he started saying to us “let’s get this WFS train rolling.” I think with Christian on board the WFS train is going to go lots of different places- places that without him we probably would not have discovered.

Here’s to the future!

Love,

Dan, Matt, Mircea and Ben.

We get by with a little help from our friends…

February 17 2010

So I (Dan) played for a fundraiser to help the people of Haiti last week. Together with two other great bands, Blaming Taylor and In Harms Way, we helped to raise over $1000 dollars to send overseas.

Its too easy to forget how great life is here in Vancouver and really how spoiled we are each and every day.

I truly feel blessed to be able to spend time with music instead of worrying about the roof over my head and the foot on my plate.

Review of the Bourbon show!! by Ronatron.net

December 14 2009

image

So! We have to thank Emily Groundwater for writing the review and Will McClary for snapping some excellent shots of the band. Unfortunately, in all the hustle and friendly faces at the Bourbon, none of us in the WFS camp were able to touch base with Emily or Will that night. Our big thanks to both for coming out and we would love to meet you both! Something tells me that since the music community in Vancouver is quite small, that we'll probably run into each other at a show sometime soon. You can find the review here.

And thanks very much to Ron Cheng for creating, running and updating Ronatron Music . What the heck is Ronatron? And what do they do? Here's a snippit from their site:

Ronatron Music Reviews is your source to the Vancouver indie music scene. The hidden musical talent that resides in this fair city does not get the exposure it needs, and with that in mind, this online publication goes deep into the heart of the underground and exposes the diamond in the rough. From live show reviews to independent EP’s, we want to help those struggling indie bands get the recognition they deserve. Vancouver is a vibrant city, full of potential so we want these talented musicians to be recognized and be proud Vancouverites.

Let the Good Times Roll…

October 17 2009

Jay Su + AWG Fundraiser

August 16 2009

Hey sportsfans!

So last night we played for a very special occasion. We played at a celebration of life for Jay Su. Although I've only had the chance to meet Jay a couple if times, it was enough to get a feeling of the rad person he was. Even more saddening was the ripple of emotion seen through my circle of friends... who had the privilege to know Jay at a closer level. This was also an awareness of the Drew families loss... Jay Drew, who also died in a tragic car accident.

AND furthermore, on a happy note... to raise some money for the average white guys football team! GO AWG!

I was definitely touched at the moment when everyone came together to remember Jay as we played one of our more depressing songs "Departed" This song is not one that I enjoy to play very often just because of its sad message behind it. BUT it this situation is seemed to fit just right. We would like to send out a huge thank you to Rich Norman and everyone else who help setup the stage. Your support means the world! Another huge thanks to Wayne for doing the sound, and rockin' those Bob Marley covers. Very appropriate! Apparently Beer pong isn't my sport either, I'll just stick to the sidelines as I was a DD last night. The whole event was a "hand your keys over" which means there was ZERO drinking and driving to be taken place.

Remember, many people have suffered a tragic loss to the hands of drinking and driving. Its NOT something to be taken lightly. I know if anything were to happen to a close friend of mine due to a stupid mistake... I would be lost. So just remember that it can happen to you the next time you bring the keys with you, and do the right thing.

Ron Stewart, RIP

August 13 2009

We all have our reasons in life. We all do what we have to do, what we need to, but sometimes we do things because we love to.

I love to play guitar, sing, and write songs. The reason this all started is because of one man, one musician, my uncle... Ron Stewart. This morning I got an email telling me that he passed away yesterday morning at 9:30. Cancer of the liver... Right now It's hard to believe as he took me to lunch at McDonalds only a month ago. It's even harder to realize the impact his passing has upon my family and everyone who has had the pleasure of sharing some time with Ron.

Yes, this is life and yes these things happen. Yes this was too soon and very very unfortunate. It saddens me to realize we can no longer sit and chat about gear, music, classic rock or life. Ron you will be greatly missed by me, and all of the family.

I will forever be grateful to you for many reasons. Your inspiration, your knowledge of the industry passed down, and most importantly, the gift of music that has opened my eyes to a whole new world of enlightenment. Ron sent me a written letter in the mail, I didn't think anyone still sent out letters anymore, but that's just his style. Old school. Within the letter he sent me his cd's and a demo track of a song he has been working on... he asked me to do something with it... The song is called "follow your heart" and something tells me he had me in mind when he began working on this song.

So Ron, I would be honored to finish your demo, and keep your name and thus, keep your music alive. Its warming to still hear your voice on these cd's but its also a very sad experience because it makes me feel as if your beside me playing these same songs at the family barbeque.

Last few words here...

Ron you are missed.
I'm happy you no longer feel any pain.
I know your playing your guitar somewhere...
I will never forget you.

Love,

Dan

"theres somethng now i wish you could see,
never did doubt once that you had it in you, just like me.
go on young one, play your melody,
yours will be the voice of reason and the voice ringin' out through the trees"
