Rednyne Proudly Presents: Waiting for Sunday with Jack Mercer

March 11 2010
Event time: Doors @ 8 pm
Event location: The Bourbon - 50 West Cordova ( Vancouver )

-----Waiting for Sunday-----

We all have our reasons in life. Have you ever wanted something so bad it hurts? Then you know how Waiting for Sunday feels about music.

You may see WFS as just another acoustic folk rock band. But what if it could be something more? Something borne of hardship, friendship and a little faith. Something to push you through the hard days, through the 9-5, and well... to keep you sane in today's world. What if these songs could bring you closer to a raw human experience, to a connection that is becoming increasingly rare in a culture driven by faceless communication?

But these gentlemen are not always about the big picture, it’s also in the details. It’s about paying homage to those they love and admire. City and Colour comes to mind. So does Radiohead. Johnny Cash, Muse and Pearl Jam. Not to mention their peers within Vancouver’s artistic community that influence and inspire.

Songs of love, life, experience and hardship are the foundation which brought this band together. Quite simply... it's music with a message. Go out on a limb and put your faith in something. As scary as it might seem, the reward might be worth the risk.

-----Jack Mercer-----

Jack Mercer has spent most of his life busting his ass, first on fishing and tug boats where the risk is higher than the reward, then experiencing life backpacking around the globe, now playing music in bar after bar for anyone who’ll listen. That knack for turning hard times into good times has turned Mercer’s songs and live shows into something that can’t be ignored. That’s exactly what the Westham Island, BC entertainer does on his debut album Driftwood. A collection of not so laid-back originals about traveling, addiction, love lost and the trials and trails of society. Life’s answers, self discovery and self awareness are apparent throughout, especially on “Lonely City,” and there is no city lonelier than Lund, BC where Mercer spent half a year working and writing.

Mercer’s songs showcase not just his way with words, his open tuning, finger picking and slide guitar playing would no doubt have heroes John Butler and Ben Harper tapping along. From the delicate lap slide on “On the Road” to the percussive guitar playing on “Reciprocity” you can picture the beach vibe that his songs evoke. “Nothing gets me as high as playing my songs for an audience and seeing their faces and their reaction. And trust me. I’ve had my highs!”

It’s obvious that Jack’s live show is his bread and butter. Sweating it out, stomping feet, smacking his guitar, and all the while sporting a shit-eaters grin, the stage is where he’s meant to be. Mercer has taken up residency at Ladner, BC’s River House Pub, regularly performing for packed houses. His August 2009 gig there saw the Pub’s largest ever night for alcohol sales, proving he can show his supporters and growing fan base a good time. Whether you were there to see him or not, you will leave a fan.
